FILE BY APRIL 15 OR FILE FOR AN EXTENSION

The tax deadline is near, but perhaps you haven’t yet pulled together all the paperwork and/or receipts you need to file by April 15. If you aren’t going to file by April 15, you need to request an extension.
Extensions are easy to get. You are not even required to state the reason you are requesting an extension. File Form 4868 by April 15 to request an extension. Once you get an extension, you will be given until October 15th to file. Failure to file your taxes or an extension by April 15 will result in penalties and interest.
An Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File (Form 4868) can be found at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf.
It’s important to note, however, that filing for an extension will not extend the time you have to pay your taxes. If you do not pay what you owe by April 15, you will be charged interest.
